Dry Mouth|Dryness in Oral Cavity;

DRY-MOUTH; Dry mouth is defined as the Loss of moisture in the oral cavity.Some people also have dryness in eyes and nose, its related to Sjogren Syndrome.
The moisture is maintained by the Saliva,which is secreted by Salivary glands. The salivary glands are major and minor salivary glands,parotid gland,sub-mandibular gland,sublingual salivary gland. There are hundreds of small salivary glands are located in the lining of mouth and the tongue.
Dryness of the mouth is due to lack of saliva ,primarily know as Xerostomia.
Lack of saliva causes reducing the lubrications in the mouth,Tongue and gums.It casues many ulcerations,Lacerations and increasing the chance of infections.(Microbial,fungal infections).
What are the causes of dry mouth?

What are the causes of dry mouth?
The following General causes are,
- Dehydration- The lack of hydration in our body its lead to decreases the saliva productions and urine productions.
- More Sleep activity; During sleeping the saliva productions are very low, so only after wake up we have bad breath. so, the person who have more sleep activity it leads to decrease saliva production and it cause dry mouth.
- Mouth breathing habits- A person who have mouth breathing habits it cause the dry mouth, because the air flow during mouth breathing will cause the drying effect.
- Smoking also cause the dry mouth,because of nicotine effect.
- Age related- The reduce saliva is normal process associated with aging.
- Excessive intake of sugar and carbohydrate products are absorb the moisture with in the mouth, it cause dry mouth.
The following Systemic/medical causes are,
- Salivary gland stone formations; It cause an obstruction of salivary ducts and associated with pain during eating and chewing.
- Diabetes ; Dry mouth is common factor for diabetes patients,because patient having increase thirst and frequent urination process.
- Autoimmune diseases; The auto immune diseases like sjogren syndrome,sialorrhea , Sialometaplasia and Harshimotos thyroiditis.
- Immunodeficiency diseases;Dry mouth is common symptom for hiv /Aids patients.
- Drugs; Dry mouth is common symptoms for who taking medications and side effects of any drugs.antihypertensives (for high blood pressure), anti-Parkinsonian medication (for Parkinson’s disease), antihistamines (for allergies), antidepressants, anxiolytics (for anxiety) and antipsychotics .
- Other systemic diseases like, Tuberculosis,leprosy etc.
Symptoms of Dry mouth;
- Dryness of the mouth due to repeated dental cavities,dental decay and difficulty to placement of the dentures.
- Bad breath is the common complaints for dry mouth patients.
- Oral thrush,and mouth sores are common symptoms in dry mouth.
Treatment Of Dry mouth;
These above conditions who have like systemic disease, (Sjogren syndrome,hiv,salivary stones etc).Must visit your dentists and take treatments.
Alternatively mouth moistening products like lozenge sprays,mouth washes, tooth paste,sugar free gums.
